about

Australian jazz and jazz musicians have many great qualities: an uncommon energy and adventure, some might say a Gothic element inherent in the culture, which makes comparisons with the overseas product a dangerous business. In any case musical comparisons are only valid if the cultural source from which the music emanates is considered.

The artistry of Joe Chindamo is a special case, for his talent is so vast and deep that it transcends both stylistic and cultural considerations.

Amidst all his various musical activities the two features which characterise his playing are the sheer finesse of his pianism. One is instantly aware that here is a musician of the highest rank. his tone, touch and technique at the keyboard are outstanding in whatever idiom one wishes to place him. Which means that whatever he plays, the listener is in very safe hands. it will always be beautiful of sound which for most of us remains at the heart of all good music-making.

Further, his command of various musical languages- on this album, the contemporary Africa-American language of jazz stems clearly from an ideal combination of mind and musicality, both of which are evident also in his choice of musicians for this album. I have not heard a more inventive and sympathetic rhythm section than bassist Ben Robertson and Tony Floyd. And with percussionist Alex Pertout's contribution and the glorious voice of Christine Sullivan singing the title track, Chindamo has added something quite special to Australian recorded music.

To the music of this album.

Up until recently jazz musicians have shied away from the popular music of the 60s and beyond. There are two reasons, the first being that improvising musicians have always railed against any notion of commercialism and the consequent sanitisation of their beloved art form, and secondly, and unlike the music of the Gershwins, Kerns, Porters and the like popular music became highly personalized, with tunes being written for particular artists, often for themselves.

Is Bacharach as great a composer as Gershwin or Kern? Let's not get into that debate. Better to remind ourselves that in the hands of musicians such as Joe Chindamo, with his ability on this recording to inject these lovely songs with the wealth of language unique to contemporary jazz musicians, Bacharach takes on a whole new dimension which is both highly accessible and highly artistic.
